Amazon Info Leak: Pre-Orders for Kindle Fire Exceeding 2,000 Units Per Hour

Our previous story suggested that the Amazon Android Tablet, the 'Kindle Fire,' will be an impressive and profitable product for Amazon. This new report seems to confirm that. In fact, it also confirms the appropriateness of the tablet's name, as it seems to be "kindling a fire" in consumers' wallets. There was a leak of an internal sales document from Amazon, and it indicates that pre-order sales for the device have exceeded 2,000 units per hour! That equates to over 50,000 per day, and apparently, 250,000 Kindle Fires were purchased within the first 5 days pre-orders were available. At this rate, if it continues, Amazon will need to have at least 2.5 million ready for launch on November 15.

Here's the real kicker... if these pre-order sales figures hold up, the Kindle Fire is on track to surpass the numbers for the original launch of the iPad. Here's a quote from the Geek.com article,
We have to assume interest in the Kindle Fire will only grow as launch day approaches, especially if Amazon starts advertising the tablet heavily. But one thing is already clear: the Kindle Fire will easily surpass the launch of the iPad if these pre-order figures are correct. The original iPad only achieved 1 million sales in its first month.
They do point out that this is somewhat of an unfair comparison, because Apple launched the very first tablet, so consumers didn't quite know what they were getting in for. Now, people are aware of tablet computing and its benefits so this will of course skew those numbers higher. Still, it will be an impressive feat nonetheless, because it will match the initial ales numbers of the iPad2. The success of the Kindle Fire seems to be burning like a wildfire for Amazon.

Oh blah blah. Even if the iPad was the first Tablet, the iPhone had been out for some time and people knew what to expect...an oversized iPhone.

Hey now... apple wastes, er, I mean invests a lot of money on PR people. Let them do their job and spin every story so that they can launch a new 3G phone that is "theoretically" capable of 4G data transfer rates, and "that they have the biggest smartphone OS on the market"

Touche... sorry, I'll take the blame for that one.

Back on the topic of the Kindle Fire.... what are the odds that the massive success will lead to a 10.1 version?

I hope this thing is extremely successful because it will force its Android counterparts to think about lowering prices on tabs.

I've seen several (speculative) reports that a 10.1 is coming on the heels of the 7". Speculation, of course, but I buy it!

I have a standard argument for this, which you've probably seen elsewhere: we won't see mainstream 10" tablets under $300 because of all the extra features --especially those the Fire lacks -- camera(s), GPS, maybe 3G, etc.

Now let me make a TRULY GRUMPY prediction: UNLESS Amazon designs an interface that is as polished as the iPad's (just going on broad generalizations here), I can tell you for sure the overwhelming response to the Fire by "Your Average User" will be "GOSH DARN, how does this thingamajig WORK!??!?!" At least what I hear over and over and over (particularly with Android vs. iPhone) is Apple = "set it and forget it", while Android = "hmm...what's under the hood?" (or maybe "Has it been ROOTED yet??").

Now admittedly, Amazon is layering their UI over...is it Gingerbread? And admittedly, ANYBODY with a 4th grade education can work an Android device. But you know...some people need things simple and fool-proof. But I can just see it now -- "HONEY, this thing don't work like an iPad!!!!! Send it back!!!!" ARGH.

    OK, end of rant.

    -Matt

PS Afterthought: actually, Android phones are doing pretty good. Maybe I'm wrong -- but then the cell-phone customer base and the tablet customer base don't overlap perfectly.

I agree that we wont see the 10" tabs below 300 but if Amazon can make 50 bucks (reportedly) per 7 inch tab at a 199 price point, than there is really no excuse to sell a tab for 500-700 bucks, IMO of course.
