Crap, reread the post again but it wont let me edit.

From what I have read, it patches the NV from dun.vzw.com to vzw.com so that it looks like you are just using the phone instead of sharing the connection via wifi hotspot.

What do I think? I think it's more unsubstantiated speculation. I traced the source of the original article (through 5! different links) back to a MobileDia and Forbes article which gives no specific statement from the company, but instead relies on the evidence of people using Jailbroken Tethering apps being redirected to a Verizon Sign-up page for their Hot Spot services. However, I just attempted to tether now with Wireless Tether and it worked fine.

What does this mean? It could mean a few different things:

    1) This is only specific to certain Jailbroken apps (meaning iPhone users)
    2) This could eventually catch up to all unauthorized tethering apps.
    3) Verizon has already done all it can do to stop unauthorized tethering, so if you can still tether, there is nothing to worry about unless you are in the top 5-15% of data abusers.

There are other things it could mean, but I'm not wasting time speculating on it until more concrete evidence shows up.

Yeah just a rumor until were hear it from vzw themselves, but if they do have a way to detect tethering I see no reason why they wouldn't implement something like this...we'll see...

They already pulled the apps from the market, but, we are the Droid community, and where there's a will there's a way.
oh that is undoubtedly true but it wouldn't take much for them to hire a couple full time employees who's full time job was to actively seek out third party apps and or the dev's who are creating those apps.
They could do that but all they could do is buy them out. You can not tell them they cant make the app. The devs covered themselves by putting on their webpage that they not responsible if you violate your carriers term of service. With that said tiered plans is all carriers need to do and leave people alone. If I am on a tiered plan then wont bother me if I want to use a tethering app.
