Samsung Now Target of Microsoft's Patent Licensing; Wants $15 Bucks per Android

Previously we reported that in a strange kind of irony, Microsoft was actually making more from Android patents than from its own Windows Phone 7 mobile OS. We listed several companies, including HTC, Velocity Micro, Onkyo and others that are now having to pay Microsoft a patent fee for every single Android device they make. This is based upon a number of patents that Microsoft holds that are used in Androids.

Apparently, Microsoft is gunning for the "big boys" now. They are now going after the 2nd largest cellphone manufacturer in the world, Samsung, for these same patent fees. And, they aren't asking paltry amounts either... Microsoft reportedly wants $15 bucks per Android device that Samsung makes. Further intel suggests that Samsung may try and negotiate that down to a $10 dollar per device fee in exchange for some other concessions, perhaps even Samsung adopting WP7 for more of their phones. It'll be interesting to see how this deal pans out.

It almost makes you feel sorry for Sammy. It's like they are getting picked on from all sides now.

Why doesn't Google have to deal with this? Just the manufacturers who use Google's product that involves Microsoft's patents? Odd as Google recieves royalties by manufacturers to use the os.

Google is not paid to use the OS. Google reclaims the money from giving the OS away in ad and market revenue. That is Microsoft wont go after Google in this. They dont make money on the patent infringements to get royalties off of...

How does protecting your patents relate to your first comment?
Does the Patent system need work ? Yes
But you have to use the system the way it is until its changed.

Samsung should pay up just like everyone else.

    Patent Years...
So How long do you think is fair for a company to get paid for the technology they developed and patented?

The issue with a lot of tech patents is that they dont have to develop them in many cases. You can patent a design even if you never build it or take the time to see if it works. Hell the other product does not even have to be a direct copy as yours to sue but if they are close enough you have a case.

There is a serious issue with tech patents due to the fact that they do not have to develop anything or really R&D stuff. They spend nearly nothing except the fees to send in patent requests on scribbles.
