LG and WiKitude Producing 3D Augmented Reality App

The technology behind augmented reality has been the same since first released for Android phones in 2008, and Nokia phones before, but the latest deal between LG and WiKitude brings things to a new level. The companies are working together to bring a new 3D augmented view application for LG’s newly released Optimus 3D. The application would make use of the 3D capabilities of the phone, and WiKitude’s 100 million and growing database of businesses and other locations. The application will also support twitter, flickr, and foursquare.

I don't get the appeal of these apps. Sure, it's kinda of a neat sci-fi effect, but overhead maps are so much cleaner, and they don't require dual core 3D anything. It's like putting the cart before the horse, ok we got this really powerful platform, now lets find a use for it. I know, let's make a really complicated GPS map thing that uses 2 screens, 2 cpu's, 2 radios, 3 cameras, and 8 microhpones so people can see where there are and what's around them. Hey, don't we already have those? Yes, but they're not 3D. Right.
