Motorola XOOM $800 plus minimum 1 month service?

A leaked Best Buy ad shows the pretty new Android tablet at a whopping price of $799.99 available in-stores Thursday February 24th. The only problem is in order to get wi-fi, you have to pay for one month of data.

Do you guys think the dual-core, Honeycomb, and 4G (later on) is worth the price?

Not worth that price tag in my opinion. For that price it should at least be Wi-Fi only. Paying for a data plan as well?

    It's not $800.00 neither it's $799.99

    I kid I kid : )

I don't really care about the price tag as it can go on the Business card I care about having to pay for a month of data in order to unlock wi-fi. That really annoys me

Locked bootloader, locked price, locked wi-fi... what's next?

Xoom mandates 1 month of Verizons service

Call us crazy, but we're having a hard time interpreting this line of fine print in any other way:
"To activate WiFi functionality on this device, a minimum of one month data subscription is required."
That's listed under Best Buy's most recent ad highlighting the world's first Android 3.0 tablet, and it most certainly sounds both ominous and ridiculous. Hardcore Verizon followers may remember the days of Big Red crippling Bluetooth radios in phones in order to "coerce" users to purchase ringtones and such from them rather than snagging one on the subway from Tom, Dick and / Jane, so we definitely wouldn't put something like this by the company. It's hard to say how this will be implemented once the $800 Xoom hits retail shelves, but it's certainly hard to believe that this is a Best Buy policy (and not a Verizon mandate). We'll be digging for more details, but we'll be straight with you -- we don't like the potential implications here. At all.

    [Thanks, Michael]

Epic Fail Moto! im not going buy a device then be forced to buy even more service from Vz. Ive already got a 5 phone family plan....no way i can afford another. I guess this forces my hand for wifi only iPad...

Pay for 1 GB 1 month.. $20. Problem solved.

The XOOM is month to month no contract... so you should be fine.

I did it with my Galaxy Tab. Think of it as the cost of the xoom being $20 higher.

Verizon should have nothing to do with this! If i buy a wifi only device im not going to be forced to buy another companies service. And i believe 5 devices is the most i can do for my family plan, which means ill have to get another one, which means a million hidden fees and that 20 bucks will be way more!

Having to pay 800.00 bones and THEN pay for a data plan to use Wi-Fi? How does this work? Something is not right with this equation.

It doesn't matter how inexpensive one month is, if I have no intention of using vzw service, I shouldn't be forced to do so.
