    Rooting

Can somebody please explain (in the simplest of terms) what the heck rooting is and why everybody here is doing it? What's the purpose of it? Am I missing out on something?

And why would it void the warentee on the phone?

Rooting basically makes you the administrator of your phone. Think of a computer: if you are not the administrator you will be unable to perform certain functions. Just like that, by rooting your phone you can do things that normally you couldnt.
It voids warranty probably because a lot of people who root do illegal things such as free wireless tethering (whereas having wireless tethering the legitimate way would cost twenty additional dollars a month)

Think of a house with a basement. Everything that makes the house operate (hot water heater, furnace, circuit breaker, etc) is down in the basement but the door is locked. Rooting unlocks the door.
When rooted, you have access to EVERYTHING on your device instead of being locked out. Also allows you to install custom ROMs, themes, kernels, basebands, whatever you want! It voids you warranty because the manufacturers don't like anyone else tampering with their programming.

since when is using wireless tethering "illegal"

it's like saying fm radio is illegal because you would have to buy a sirius subscription if you didn't have free fm.

Its illegal because youre "stealing" revenue from the carrier, youre putting another device on their network without paying for the increase in bandwith.

Wireless tethering uses service...that service has a price...by not paying for it but still using the service you are essentially stealing that service. That said, I am not judging anyone who has or will have a wireless tethering app on their phone (i have one) I am just trying to provide an explanation as to why moto voids warranty if the user roots

    are you retarded?

no you cannot go to jail, no the local, federal, or worldwide government will not give 2 sh*ts if you chose to root your phone or chose not to. Lets make it "illegal" for people to post idiot comments on this forum yea?
