Do you have to have 2.2 ROM Froyo to do Wifi tethering?

I just rooted my droid today, and wanted to overclock it. I know I have to find a kernel to do that, but I also was interested in Wifi Tethering, but is this only possible on a 2.2 ROM + Kernel?

I have no custom ROMs installed yet, and just wanted to find a basic Kernel that I could overclock + wifi tether with. I have the ESE81 build.

    Thanks

You can download barnacle and tether without changing the kernel or ROM - all you need is root.

OR you can change just the kernel and run android-wifi-tether and overclock.

ROM is optional, but any of them should work fine for both tether and overclocking
    Cool CM Tricks
custom_backup_list.txt - make a list of files in /system that will survive a nightly install (ringtones, notifications, system apps, wallpapers, whatever)
in Terminal Emulator, set this as your shell command: "/system/xbin/su -c /system/xbin/bash". You get all the features of bash, root access, and you can still use the initial command field for whatever you want (default is adding /data/local/bin to your path)

You need to have a netfiltered Kernel with that application.

    Since forever?

Are you SURE you are using a stock kernel? Did you install a ROM of ANY kind, including the so-called "stock" roms? they often have a kernel with them.

barnacle should work without a replacement kernel, however
