Officer: "Let me see your License, Registration, and Proof of Insurance. And hand that Droid over to me."

He walks back to his car. Takes 30 minutes because not only is he running a check on your car he's playing Home Run Battle 3D. Then he runs a quadrant test.

He comes back to the car. "You were going a little over the speed limit which is why I pulled you over. However I see here you have rooted your Droid. So unfortunately I'm going to have to take you to jail."

Well, at least he didn't find your crack pipe this time.

Go to settings, about phone, legal information, then open source licensing...rooting is NOT illegal, Motorola just doesn't like users messing with their programming.

If you like my work or I have helped you out and you would like to help me keep the lights on, it is greatly appreciated!!

Hacking/Rooting anything that you buy is not illegal. It is what you do afterwards.
For example: You softmod your XBox 360, not illegal. Downloading pirated games for it and playing them, illegal. However you still wouldn't go to jail for it anyways, you would pay fines and stuff. An EULA is not a law, it is there to say "If you break it doing this or that it's on you". It isn't there for legal ramifications such as incarceration. Anyways tell the IT dude he's won the Moron of the Month Award please.

This entire thread, so far, has been great for a laugh.

    'what are you in for?'

"i stabbed my own brother, you?"

'oh, um, rooted my droi - erm, I busted a cap in a fool. You heard, word?'
    -Joseph

It has been brought to my attention that I don't meet the requirements to post my dropbox referral link in my signature. Also it's against our forum rules...
So if you're interested, ask me about my Dropbox referral link.

Last I heard, in order to go to jail you either have to break a law, get a visitor pass or take some classes in criminal justice and get a job as a guard. LOL

Do me a favor next tell your friend next time he sees that IT guy to just point and laugh.

    LG G2X w/ rooted 2.3.3 leak.

It's OK for your Droid to be different. Just be supportive and reassuring and it will do just fine. It's when you or other people point at it or mock it for being different is when its' feelings get hurt. Just show it unconditional love regardless of its' differences and it will in turn reciprocate that love and loyalty.

Not to try and wet blanket the thread, I had a similar conversation with my wife. Back when I first rooted and hacked my droid, I had to show it off to my wife. She was dumbfounded and asked me why I had turned into one of the people she has heard me threaten over the years, hackers. She did not understand the difference between me hacking my phone, and someone hacking into a politicians email to try and destroy them. Or someone trying to hack into my computer to try and destoy me, my computer or my identity.

I did get her straightened out, but in the conversation I did see that we are talking a grey line here. Sure we bought the phone, but how many paid full retail? How many folks would pay retail for a replacement if they hack it oblivion? Folks here like to pat themselves on the back about not having any truely bricked phones (Bill???), but from months of reading threads I can guarantee you that lots of phones that were not technically bricked went home to VZW. Did any of these folks use insurance?

Clearly this tech was not too smart about phone hacking, but had he said that it was wrong and not illegal, perhaps we might have a slightly different conversation. Or, perhaps he was referring to at least one the major dev's out there who was "served" with notice to not include google apps in his romming. Don't know if the "serve" was an email, a letter or something with a signature containing esquire, but clearly on the line of someone potentially going legal for perceived illegality.
