I L O V E my D1----BUT i still have the opportunity to (30day trade in ) to perhaps get the Dx or Dinc...which 1 is the "1" and all this adding to the droid myself..will that take the place of Dx and Dinc? also please explain all those words to me. I WANT TO LEARN-you guys and this website is mezmorizing addictive teach me. sorry this THREAD is soo long.....help me

I meant if I add the FROYO (up-to-date-minus the FB/and MAPS) will it pretty much make my phone the "DX" or the Dinc"? make sense????

Read the stickies.... They should explain it all to you.

Also, Wikipedia is good to. ROM doesnt have it's own Wiki page, but root and kernel do.

Please read the stickies in the Droid Hacks section, they are very informative.

For a brief summary, Root is the Linux (Android is based on Linux) equivalent of Administrator access on Windows. It lets you do many things such as theme or tether your phone.

The kernel is the programming on which the kernels and phone operates on (kind of, I still don't fully understand it but that's really all you need to know). A custom kernel can allow for wireless tether, overclocking, and overall a snappier phone.

Not really sure how I can explain a custom ROM, basically developers take the official ROM (which is on your phone now) or the source code for the Android updates, and build off of that. So basically the difference between a custom rom and the stock one would be themes, snappiness, etc.

The kernel is simply the portion of the OS that sits closest to the hardware. It exists solely to sit between the hardware and the rest of the OS.

ROM is just a misnomer for OS - consider them interchangeable on the forum.

At the top of most subforums there are threads that dont change position over time. They start with "Sticky: " in the title, and are called stickies. We use them, and other forums use them, to explain rules and answer common questions.
