    Ubuntu?

I am thinking of either switching my laptop to Linux or making it dual boot with Linux so I can start working on my own themes. It seems at DistroWatch.com: Put the fun back into computing. Use Linux, BSD. that Ubuntu is the most used, any other suggestions?

I'm a strong believer in Debian. It's what Ubuntu is based off of and is more stable. It's not bleeding edge, but it's a reliable workhorse.

I've been with Ubuntu since it was released in 04, I made the switch from RedHat when it was purchased by IBM (I think), and I'll never consider switching away. It's the most widely supported and used distro right now, because it has corporate backing and it straight up works. It provides you all the power that a hardcore Linux user wants, and also the GUI and user-friendliness that a newbie needs.

I like Arch myself, but use Ubuntu for developing.

It just works, and despite that its much slower than Arch, it does what I need it to do, without complaining.

Thanks guys for the help/info. Guys at work were saying this is going to suck me in, I guess I would rather teach myself something new than just piss away that time on the tv. Any other advice, tutorials, websites you guys suggest that would be helpful would be greatly appreciated.

The Linux Documentation Project will give you plenty of info to read. Various projects to try out, man pages, how-to's, etc.

If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

Definitely try Ubuntu -- its probably one of the friendliest Linux distros available right now and the support offered through the UbuntuForums is top notch -- in fact I can't think of a better support site for anything (droid included). Some may think of Ubuntu is "Linux lite" meaning its geared toward noobies. This is partly true, however it does offer many of the same features of the big boy distros (Arch, Gentoo, Debian), but is definitely more friendly. For anyone new to Linux, I would definitely recommend Ubuntu as their first stop into the Linux foray

The U is junk , heck Slackware is easier than Ubuntu.
openSUSE , is not bad, the U teaches bad habits, and talk about bloated , the U fits the bill.
    Ubuntu the Microsoft of Linux.
I always ask, if it is so easy why does anyone need support for it then ?
Use the force, but not Ubuntu !
Linux user for over 15 years .
To Droid or not to Droid is no longer a question , DROID!
