    Thumbs down Problem editing Launcher.apk

Ok, so I used root manager to pull launcher.apk, opened it up as a .zip, and extracted all the files.

I edited several of the gfx and zipped it back up, and renamed it Launcher.apk.

I then used root manager to plop it back into the system, and it doesnt work. My phone freezes at the M.

I then decided to take a different approach, and since I'm already running Pete's ESE81, I just used his ROM, edited the Launcher.apk in there, and then tried a clean install. The only thing I changed was Launcher.apk. I'm still getting stuck at the M.

    Any suggestions as to why?

Yeah. It's not a zip. Parts of it are stored as a zip. It's not a zip.

.apk's are just zip files renamed as .apk's AFAIK.
You can rename a .apk to .zip and open/edit it.
I am renaming to .apk before pushing it back to system.

I read that on some forum, these ones or over at alldroid or somewhere. Was I mis-informed? How else to people edit .apk's then?

put file on the root of your sd card
boot into recovery mount system and sdcard
    open command prompt
get in to your tools folder
    type adb shell
    then busybox cp -R Launcher.apk /system/app
    exit

    should work

I havent been able to get ANYTHING to work pushing from adb, I'll mess around with it tomorrow though. Im heading to bed now and don't feel like spending 10 minutes doing a restore and what not right now if it doesn't work.

    Your question has been answered.

If you want to know what makes it an APK, feel free to read up on that.

You need to use a program called 7-zip. to open the apk correctly and edit any files NOT rename to .zip and open.

Best thing to do, but also the longest, most complicated to setup initially, is to download the launcher source, and compile it after you make changes.
