I got it figured out,
I'm currently rooted and loving it (:
Just one more question,
With the program i installed to root my phone, i just ignored option one and did steps 2, 3 and 4.
Now my question is, if i plug my phone back in to my PC, do i use option 1 to unroot??
Gents, I have a few dumb questions, please don't kill me, I am also new to this rooting business, I was a blackberry man for years, have had my XT912 now for a while, but want to see how much more i can get out of it, before i throw it in the garbage...
What are the real benefits of rooting ? after I root with the above step by step directions, what next ? will i have more menus on the phone and access to stuff i never had ? will my sucky battery time be improved ? ram storage etc ?
Currently I am 4.0.4 ICS and system version is 6.16.211.
Please be gentle with your replies, I am a virgin at this. .
Well... one thing you will be able to do after root is WiFi tether for free. You can install custom ROMs. There are loads of apps that require root access to use. I'm kinda new as well but the free WiFi tether was what won me over. Especially since I still have the unlimited data plan with Verizon. You won't even know that its Rooted. Everything should work the same.
Titanium Backup is, for me, a reason in and of itself to be rooted; it will backup your apps and data to your SD card, which is useful in general, but tremendously useful if you're likely to play around with custom ROMs or any situation where you're likely to reset your phone. You can also use it to freeze apps that you have no interest in using but don't want to delete from your phone entirely.
My reason for rooting is free WiFi tether but you can only take advantage of that if you have an unlimited plan. The new tiered plans have the WiFi included so hacking the hotspot or WiFi tether app would be useless.
Custom ROMs are cool to play with because of the customization, over clock, and in theory better battery life but in my opinion stock ROM works best on battery life.
