I've never read or heard of a bricked Droid. Some people say they have a bricked phone, but a bricked phone won't even turn on let alone get you to the splash screen then reboot. That is the most common "brick" people run into. If you get to the splash screen, you can fix your phone. Even if you can't get to the splash screen but you can get into the Recovery Console you're also, fine. Make a backup, use the recovery, have a copy of the original ROM update available to you and you are fine.
Even if you are using the updater from Sholes on the market, READ how to root, what each term means and what to do in the event of a problem.
Just because they made it easy for you to do, doesn't mean they gave you the information about what you are doing. If something happens and you come back to the forum board to ask for help, do you know if you are asking for help about the ROM, the recovery_image, the back up file, etc, etc. No, you don't know what the difference is so odds are we couldn't help you.
There is a whole section in this forum dedicated to hacking and ROMs. I would shake myself over there and read up the difference between the ROMs, etc. Rootyourdroid is also an amazing site with tutorials and basic rooting information.
I can put you behind the wheel of a car and give you a drivers license, does that mean you know how to drive? Of course not and you would probably end up hurting someone.
If anything in this post didn't make sense to you, you should do a little bit more research before you attempt to root or allow an app to root your phone. I don't say this to sound mean or put you off, but it's very important to know what is going on when you do this. If you don't, like I said, we can't help you in the event of a problem.
