    at these three steps

    15. Type 'mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system' without the quotes. This will make the phone's internal drive writable so that we can copy files to it from the sdcard in the next step. For steps 15, 16, and 17 you need to make sure you copy EVERYTHING exactly as you see it. Also, remember to hit ENTER at the end of each line. Enter is located RIGHT BELOW the delete key, it is NOT the gold button in the center of the directional pad.

    16. Type 'dd if=/sdcard/flash_image of=/system/bin/flash_image' without the quotes. It will tell you how many bytes in/out. This copies the flash_image utility to the phones internal drive where we need it.

    17. Type 'chmod 755 /system/bin/flash_image'. This changes the permissions of flash_image so that we can use it.

i am getting stuck. i type in the first step and i get
usage: mount [-r] [-w] [-o options] [-t type] device directory
and then type the second step and it says
/system/bin/flash_image: cannot open for write: Read-only file system.

then the next step fails because of file permissions

    any ideas

wondering about where it says - you will NOT lose your applications, contacts, shortcuts, etc

by shortcuts do you mean your home screen layout? cause i lost mine. did you use nandroid data restore to get back your home screens?

Reinstalled and it did it again. Boots up to the pulsating red Droid eye. Sits on the animation running for about 5 minutes, then goes black. No buttons are functional. Do a battery pull and it does the same thing. The Droid animation doesn't last as long on subsequent restarts though....

If it helps, I'm updating from the original N1 2.1 rom....

Did you remember to get superuser permissions by starting with su? I haven't seen this particular error before. The 'o' is an OH not a ZERO.

dont move on if it looks like you failed at a step. rather dubious..
most likely i think is not copying perfectly, make sure you know where all the spaces are and arent, gl

No I only have ever used the update.zip. The only thing I have used Nandroid for was making a backup.

Perhaps for this, a good idea would be to a) start over by putting your phone back to stock, or b) follow the step from Pete's thread:

-Uninstall any apk & odex files I previously moved to /data (Only If Installing Over 0.7 Or Previous ROMS)

I didn't have to do that step, so I can't say for sure exactly what to do other than those two.
