I remember reading about somebody that bricked in the early stages of development of the recovery image. Toka, I think? Very few, though - that recovery console was available in the wild VERY quickly, which saved a lot of people.

It's very hard to accidentally brick now, though, if you have a current version of the recovery image running. I think you would probably have to flash over the recovery image with something corrupt AND screw up something in /system to make it not boot. Either one of those two things can be fixed if done alone (you can re-flash the recovery image if you can boot, and you can fix /system if you can boot into recovery), but if you screw both up you'll have a hard time getting out of that.

Hmm, I hadn't considered that as a possibility...

When you say automatically - is that as soon as you plug it in, or just as soon as you enable the USB mass storage to access the SD card?

aha, yes - technically it IS possible to install SPRecovery *without* using ADB or any other connection to a computer. Not for the faint of heart, though - it takes a bit of linux command-line knowledge.

Here's the writeup I did on how to do it:

Should be a piece of cake, then. Hardest part is convincing the droid to download the files you want. You could also just load them up onto the SD card through a card reader, I suppose, if you have something that can read microSD.

Huh, I wonder what happened to it - I guess it's not on the market anymore. Sad, that's a useful utility!

In any case, the key point of that set of instructions is getting flash_image and the recovery image to the phone by whatever means you have available - downloading them directly, emailing them to yourself, posting them on a webpage, changing the filename to something droid will accept, bluetooth sending, ADB push, or just dropping them onto the memory card.
