i guess my question is this.. i understand that it gives you COMPLETE access to the machine and software, but what is the benefit of doing that? like what can you do with the phone after that you couldn't do before?

Install apps like apps2sd for one along with being able to load custom cooked roms to totally change the looks of the device. For example they may come out with a rom that looks like moto blur or sense ui from htc.

I'm not sure if that's a native android 2.0 functionality or if the device must be rooted to do that, can you post a link?

One other term to be aware of "bricked" as in the disclaimer the videos post of "I take no responsibility if you brick your phone" Meaning just that your phone is a brick, doesnt work at all.

Never has happened to me and I do like to run alot of "hacked" hardware/firmware on routers, phones etc, but it is something that can happen and should be thought about.

most definatly this is why i wouldnt use a custom rom till its been out for a little bit so i can get a general consensus on how well it works or doesn't work. I also will not root my device till there is a trustworthy SDK restoration pack for this phone.

I just won't mess with it until I get around like 200+ people stating that it worked, then i might consider it.
    Resistance is futile.

Android newbs, Google android dream development and read the root guides and stickies. Brings apps 2 sd, WiFi tether, overclocking processor, backup and recovery utility, themes, enabling multitouch. You will love it !!

    Gotta love Android
