    Lock in memory...?

    Hi all...

Just wondering, as I see a lot of "Lock Home in Memory" and "Lock MMS in Memory" options in ROMs lately...what exactly does this do (for each, if possible) and what are the benefits/drawbacks to it?

I did a search through the forum before posting this question but didn't turn up anything. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

The latest CM7 (7.0.3) has those options. Their descriptions are, Lock Home in memory = Attempt to keep the current home app in memory at all times. This can cut back on re-draws/home screen lag. And Lock Messaging = Avoid lost messages on low memory situations.

Some older versions, like CM6 has those options too. I'm sure other roms also have those options. And some home launchers have their own option to be locked in memory. I know LauncherPro does.

Cool, those are some answers I can use!

Now in regard to the locking Home Screen...does that mean that apps and widgets on the screen are saved/to remain that way or something? Like, once you Lock in Memory, you have to unlock or something before changing?

Sorry, I'm feeling very ignorant right now with this question, but I've only just started seeing this in my ROM and people talk as if it's a good thing. I can just follow the flock, but I'd also like to learn as I go, y'know?

No, it just means that their harder for the droids task killer to automatically kill it them when its low on memory. This cuts back on redraws.

    Hmmm....think I found a good answer here, I believes:
cyanogenmod - LauncherPro "Keep in memory" vs "Lock home in memory" - Android - Stack Exchange

Thanks for the help as well, CJM!

    Awesome, thanks!
    Great description for a layman.

It doesn't effect your use of the home screens. You can still move stuff. It won't save them either. But some home screen launchers have that option.

That script in answer 2 will work on any rom. If you go that route, you shouldn't need the option set in the rom. The script may override the rom.

I'm sure they are too. Just saying you can use that script on a stock rooted rom.
