Not sure I recommend using the root helper app. Its probably better to do the manual work and make sure its done correctly. If you look on that root app's page you can see some users have reported a few issues with it, which is dangerous I think (even if its a small chance) for something like this.

There is always risk. After all we are talking about installing a Rom not originally created for this device. However I have installed Rev 0.0.2 - 0.0.4 with droidroothelper with no problems. As stated before there are always risks, that is the nature of the game I guess. As I always say results may vary.

I'm sorry I must not have read your original question right because I did not realize you were specifying FTP. I have heard positive things about the DroidFTP app. However I have no personal experience with it. If you would like more info here is a link to there apps FAQ.

This is true, but is it really necessary to add an extra way to brick the phone? If we can manually do this, and there are detailed step-by-step instructions, why open the possibility for this app to mess something up?

If you ask me, using this app is more risky. The most reliable method is to follow the manual instructions. After all, thats what this app is probably based off of, but what if the current (or future) version has a bug that screws everything up?

I don't like the idea of extra risk for the sake of saving a little extra work/time.

This all really depends on how well this dev tests the app. I would feel much more secure if he personally tests every feature before each update, but I doubt he wastes that much time in testing.

By all means, use this if you want, but manually doing this is much more helpful in my opinion. You don't know what changes this app makes, so your lost if something doesn't work right. When you follow a detailed guide with commands, you can see exactly what is being done, and make any desirable changes if wanted/needed. This is even more helpful when you need to make future upgrades to modifications, as you can clean out any old unneeded files from the past mod.

learning to do such basic tasks is critical to getting the most out of a rooted phone, and it will help you when you do have a problem, because you will have a greater understanding of everything. This app doesn't teach you anything.

Although I see how it can be useful for those not wanting to learn anything about basic commands or knowing what exactly has been altered.

I am on a mac. Using ADB, never touching android before, I had Greek's .0.0.3 rom and tethering up and running in 20 minutes. all manual. Followed half of the "easy way" tutorial, and half of greek's. The hard part I think was getting the recovery image on there.
