What's the difference between an AOSP ROM and a stock ROM?

Let's say I check out froyo branch and create a ROM without any modification to the code. Is there any difference between this ASOP ROM and the widely circulated FRG01B/FRG22D/FRG83D ROMs? Certainly there will be differences.

What are the differences? Please comment.

The only differences are the changes that motorola and verizon have made to source code to optimize android to work on the Droid as best as it can. These are usually pretty minimal so you won't notice any major system differences between one you build and a "stock" rom. The different stock roms "FRG01B, FRG22D.." usually just add updated proprietary files such as device specific drivers and the occasional app update or bloatware addition. In a perfect world, the stock versions should be more stable and perform "better" than those that you build yourself. As far as my experience goes, I always fall back to the stock version unless a new version of Android comes out and then I go to cyanogen because it's usually the best alternative.
