    Frustrated! Install Custom Rom

I have been working on this for about 4 hours last night and about 4 hours today, guess im about to give up. One last try, help is GREATLY appreciated!

My phone is a Sprint HTC Hero. It is rooted (that was easy). Says its rooted and runs rooted only apps.

What I am trying to do is load a custom rom.

I have Rom Manager Premium v2.5.1.3.

When I try to use it I get: Error while downloading from server. Please make sure that you have a stable internet connection and that your SD card is inserted and has free space!

I am connected with wifi and it works with other apps. My SD is 8 GB and has nothing on it.

So I try Reboot into Recovery (Rom Manager second option down) I get a little phone with I triangle and red exclamation mark that stays on no matter how long i wait. I push some of the buttons and I finally get into Android system recovery.

    My options are:
    Reboot System now
    Apply sdcard: update.zip
    Wipe data/factory reset
    Wipe cache partion

In the bottom in yellow it says :
    E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

If I do Apply sdcard:update.zip (I have update.zip rom on sdcard not in folder) I get:

    Install from sdcard
    Finding update package
    Opening update package
    Verifying update package
    E: signature verifaction failed
    Installation aborted.

I really want this to work, but I am about to give up! Any help would be GREATLY GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

FYI: Side note not sure if it matters but I do not have any phone service, didnt pay for it, got cut off, lol. Do have wifi.
Home button doesnt work on phone for some reason (hasnt for a long time)

I will be checking this post every few mins until I get a reply! Thanks again!!

i never install a rom thru RM. ...and this is why. dl the rom to your pc, and then copy it to your sdcard (or mount phone to pc and dl rom directly to sdcard). make sure the rom zip file is on the root of your sdcard, and not in any folder - i.e., when you look on the sdcard, the rom zip is it's own folder. then, manually boot into recovery, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, and then install the rom zip file.

Thanks for the fast reply!! Tried that exactly and still no go. Do you have a method you would suggest to load custom rom?

    Thanks again!!

wait, i just reread your op where you said you ended up in Android Recovery. that's the stock recovery, and not a custom recovery. you can only install a custom rom thru a custom recovery. you may have lost root, i'm not sure.

when you reboot your phone, do you still have root access? do you have the superuser app, and can open root-only apps? if so, then go into Rom Manager and make sure you have CWM recovery. the first selection at the top is "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery". do that, and then it will tell you what recovery image you have.

if you can't flash CWM, then go further down on the screen, and you will see a choice for "Flash Alternate Recovery." select that, and flash SPR (hopefully). then, once that is successfully flashed, try to flash CWM again, and see if it's successful.

no prob. altho, it was difficult to render aid to a Sooner...

RM is quirky. i frequently run into issues with my recovery image. flashing back and forth between recovery images usually solves the problem. sometimes it takes multiple times to get it to "take".

for future reference, that is why i never use RM to install a rom. i ALWAYS dl the rom to my pc, copy it to my sdcard, manually boot into recovery (not using RM), and then manually install the rom in recovery. i rarely have any issues when doing it that way.

    enjoy!
