So I started all this "quest" this morning by calling cust service. Got absolutely nowhere, but they were nice and polite about it. Bottom line, I would have to wait until Jan or pay full retail.

Phase 2, I call a V store nearby, and got a young lady who used words like "we can be creative". I immediately determined it would be worthwhile to talk with her face to face. (it was!)

Anyway, she found a broadband modem in my account (it's an embedded modem in a Lenovo laptop I've got) that wasn't on an agreement. She put that modem on a 2 year agreement (costs stayed the same, and I would be using it anyway), got the X for $149 (an extra promo she uncovered for "upgrading" the broadband modem), and replaced the X into my existing agreement that started with the Droid original! Then 25% off on all accessories, and I'm a happy camper!

Thanks for all the suggestions - you folk helped me keep the faith that there *WAS* a solution to this!

Wow, very cool! Congrats on it all working out in your favor.

Goes to show, there are some VZW associates that will go ABOVE and beyond. And others not so much.
I agree with the last thing you said. When i got my droid i had 2 guys on the phone for 30+ min trying to get the best deal for me they possibly could. They were great. Really I dont think Iv ever had a real bad experience with verizon. they always seem to help. But of course it all just depends on who you get. But Happy to hear you got the X. Thats the bad thing about these cell phones. they come out with to many and we always gotta have the next best thing lol. Which can get pricy with these 2 year deals

    you can try

a plan that I am contimplating.
    1) get a second phone line and get the droid X for it
    2) take your original line, downgrade it to phone only (no data, etc). (yes, you will be paying an extra 9.99 to keep this line)
    3) find a free phone to use this original line
    4) switch your number to the droid X on line 2.

There are, of course, fees for switching the phone numbers...but if you really, really, really want the droid x, this is a way to go.

Switching a number to another device is free, Changing your number can cost you....
