Want to early terminate to get the Droid X. Will Big Red have an issue?

    Hey all,

So I'm considering the Droid X, currently have MotoDroid. My contract isn't up this year so I can't early upgrade. This means I would have to fork out 600 bucks and the value of the Droid is sinking all the time, so who knows what that will fetch on eBay.

However, when I started my contract last November, it was early enough in the month to miss their new $350.00 early termination policy on smart-phones. That being said, my termination fee is now at $140.00 and going down 5 bucks each month.

So if I were to call and cancel my contract, then start a new one with the Droid X, it would only cost me about 330 say, and most of that paid for by selling the Droid. But it's my way to play straight up and would feel the inclination to tell Verizon that this is what I'm doing. Does anybody think I'd catch flack for this, even though it's technically legal?

I highly recommend you call Verizon to verify your etf.

i got my droid the day it came out in november and i am elegible for an upgrade this year so you might want to call just to verify if you can upgrade to the droid to the droid x.

I believe the ETf is linked to the line. As long as you aren't canceling the line of service you are okay. You may or may not get a discounted price on the X though. When I got the D1, I paid $20 so I could keep to a one year agreement just in case the iPhone or something else spectacular like the DX came out in 2010. I have four lines so having a line with an eligible upgrade is never a problem for me lol.

who told you that? they are required by law to allow you to keep your phone number, as long as you have not canceled your phone service first you should be able to just swap your number to any carrier..especially the same one.
And im pretty sure VZW lets you do early upgrades after just 1 year, they might be able to work something out with you but you sure wont be getting the phone for 199.00 if they do.

I am pretty sure when you do an ETF, they make you wait six months before starting a new contract.

that would dash those plans then. Guess I'll just bite the bullet next month and call and explain what I'm thinking. Thanks for all the replies.

Are you, perchance, on a family plan? If so, this plan may work. Add a new line of service for the X, then afterward cancel the droid line. Youll be hit with the ETF of course, but after you pay it, you can then port your old number. Ive considered doing this.
