In case there is any doubt.

    http://www.motorola.com/staticfiles/...000202474a.pdf

    Page 44 of the manual.

"Avoid leaving your phone in your car in high temperatures."

Now just because the AC is on and the ambient temperature is comfortable the phone itself is in direct sunlight when mounted on the windshield or dash. Your best bet if you want to use navigation in the car is to get a stalk mount or face mount on the dash. At least then the unit would be out of direct sunlight and can even have cool air directed at it from one of the cars dash vents.

    LG G2X w/ rooted 2.3.3 leak.

It's OK for your Droid to be different. Just be supportive and reassuring and it will do just fine. It's when you or other people point at it or mock it for being different is when its' feelings get hurt. Just show it unconditional love regardless of its' differences and it will in turn reciprocate that love and loyalty.

I have a Motorola Droid and I am running stack 2.1. This past weekend, I, too, encountered the Droid over heating when using GPS and the battery ceased charging and in fact, discharged rapidly. I unplugged the charger for about 1/2 hour and it cooled off. Once plugged in, it started charging again.

I experienced the same problem with the iphone when using nav apps. It just get hot.....as stated above, reposition your phone from direct sunlight and try to put it near a vent where it can get cool air blasts. If you running an oc kernel, drop th e speed to stock while charging or using nav apps during the summer. You really do not need you processor that high just for nav apps. The droid can run nav just fine at stock 550. The o/c is more useful for games, navigating through your phone, and internet.

I just took a road trip to the beach in NC last week and the phone heated up and stopped charging running the nav. on the way to the beach. I had it in a Garmin bean bag mount. While I was there I picked up a cheap cell phone vent mount and put it in. On the way home, I had the A/C on and ran the nav, slacker, and charged all the way home. I use the vent mounts now in both cars. If it is hot enough for me to need the A/C, it is hot enough for the Droid to need it to.

I hope you're not implying I don't have common sense. It's just crappy that I can't use my car dock, a product sold by Verizon, that is meant to sit on the dash and hold the phone when the sun is out.

I guess better common sense would be to look down at the phone in my lap to navigate and run into something because my eyes are off the road.

And people said I was crazy for adding a toggle switch to my car dock. ;-p No overheating for me.

That dock that verizon sold was to get paid....but it in not a good thing in the summer. Not saying anything about the people that buy it. Just saying it is chaeper and better to get one of the cell phone vent holders like the poster above me said.

You SERIOUSLY think that sticking a piece of electronic equipment on your dash in direct sunlight is a good idea? Hell even a high end Garmin GPS in direct sunlight will go whacky and they are stand alone GPS devices with windshield mounts. This is why companies offer vent mounts and console stalks. So it has nothing to do with who sells what but it does have to do with using some common sense.

Oh and no I am not implying anything. I am stating it.

I have my Droid OC'd to 1.2GHz, but I found that it doesn't charge well and got really when I'm using navigation or Slacker, so I set it to throttle down to 700MHz when it's plugged in. It keeps it cooler and charged.
I don't have a window mount for it for the same reason that Darkseider and several others mentioned earlier, but I didn't realize they make vent mounts... It makes sense, I just never thought about it...
I need to get one! I've been resting the phone in one of my cupholders when it's navigating, but it's too far away for me to make out the screen safely
HTC Rezound... Stock for now, with the Tag Home launcher...
