gmail hacked in the middle of the night

I know i've seen a few threads like this, but what the hell is going on. I put my phone on the oem moto charging dock last night, and this morning I wake up to an error saying that I cant log into my main gmail account. So I try to re-enter my password and nothing happens. So I get on a pc and go to log in and I have to go through a verification process to get back into my account, where a text is sent to my phone with a code.

So at 1:19am in the morning my phone is sending out mass emails to all my contacts with links to viagra and cialis!!!!!!! what the hell is this ****?

I'm using the same charger ive been using since I got the phone, nothing has changed, I have important info in my email and alot of important people that just got those emails. not impressed.

    Thoughts?

Maybe you were sleep-droiding... it's a very rare case in these woods.

That's not a charger issue. Your account was hijacked. Not much you can do after the fact. Just change your password and move on.

Happened to my hotmail account last year.

Yeah - that sounds more malicious than the erratic behavior normally caused by a bogus charger.

I can assure you that there was zero sleep-droiding going on.

there are many websites out there detailing how to hack gmail accounts. Most of the mass spammers out there use hijacked email accounts.

#1 the emails are more likely to be read when they come from someone you know and don't get spam filtered, #2 they are more likely to be read because they email your contacts, aka verified accounts, #3 they are far less likely to encounter any sort of repercussions for sending spam.

The upside is that it is usually a totally automated process and no human went through your emails and read them.

All the same, I'd still change any passwords that might have been in confirmation emails in that account.

And I wouldn't recommend googling how they do it. I have a policy against visiting any site that has a focus on hacking, just seems like a bad idea to me.

I changed my password, the only thing it asked for during the confirmation process was when I logged in, it asked for my mobile number, so it could send my phone a text with a verification code. I got the text right away, then entered the code and it let me in. Anything else I should do?
