I've wondered the same thing. Best solution I came up with, is to reduce the refresh to 5 mins (the minimum).

In the Google Voice app: Menu> Settings> Refresh and notification> Refresh inbox> 5 mins.

I have mine set to notify my standard google mail account and that seems to work out near instantly.

Are you under the impression that (a) Google voice is primarily an app devoted to supporting notification of phone calls or (b) that Verizon's voice mail supports instant notification?

I agree that instant notification would be ideal but since I have (not infrequently) gotten notification of my Verizon voicemail three days to three weeks after a phone call, I'm extremely satisfied with the notification sent by Google Voice.

I see, yea that is a bit odd being that it's all google's system... I just get notified of a missed call and then i just check my voicemail in case, but yea why refresh every 5 mins, why cant it just know...
