I use GDE with hero theme for my app drawer and extra buttons, so far so good after using it about 3 weeks. I find that even with 5 screens, I will put a bunch of widgets up and end up killing my battery a lot faster, than when I had 3 screens and less widgets. Mainly it was a twitter widget that was eatting it up.
Just installed helix launcher, fast, love the app dock on the bottom and no FC's yet. I really liked Home++ but the FC's were killing me. Working great with my live wallpapers too. I never thought I was so ADD when it came to what my phone/home screens look like but I change it every couple of days!
Helix here too. I finally clicked the "use this one as the default" button so I no longer get the option box for Helix, the original home and home++. I'd bounce between the others but this works good. Added Ultimatefaves down in the bottom bar too.
If you apply a rom or theme - backup first!
If you don't know how to backup...Stop until you do.
hint: I name my backups like this: sg6.0_20100428 or ss4.2_20100626 to easily find them later. rom and date.

I have home switcher from the market. I am constantly playing around with home apps/ apks. Ima stick with HL1 for awhile, or atleast until something else cool is released.
I'll toss in another vote for GDE. It has a 1x4 widget that holds application icons that you can then scroll through, plus the optional themes (I too have the Hero theme and am lovin it).
But if you do try GDE and that widget, just remember this: to delete it you have to long-press on the very left or right side of the screen where the widget is. It doesn't respond to the typical long-press anywhere to drag-n-drop behavior most widgets have.
On the other hand, I've stopped using the 1x4 application dock in GDE. Instead, I use the abcOrganizer to hold groups of applications accessible from a single user-selected icon. Keeps more screen real estate free and allows me to order the apps in popup panel however I like. (I found the alphabetical order imposed by the application dock to be problematic.)
