    Can you get a virus?

A co-worker swears he and his wife both got viruses on their Droids and before their 30 days was up swapped them back in. Is this possible and if so how do you avoid it?

Hardly believable but I guess possible. I haven't read one story of anyone from DF having a virus on their Droid.

I doubt (hopefully) you really need it, but you can get free antivirus software from the market.. I do run "lookout", just to be safe...

I would put money on it that it was user error.

There is no need for any anti-virus on the Droid, Lookout is also not needed.

Look at it this way. There are tons of iPhones compared to Droids. And there are tons of PC's compared to Macs. Who always gets attacked? PC's. Because the people that make these malicious things want to go after the largest group they possibly can.

Macs haven't had a virus in years. iPhone has had one worm that I know of and it was more or less a joke. Droid just doesn't seem like a likely candidate.

I kind of figured is was not really possible. With two phones?? I think more than likely he was just wanting to get out of an expensive contract or something.

Now that is a more likely, and plausable conclusion!

One phone, perhaps, but only the lemmings out there would claim two of them, in the same period, etc. Of course that said, if they went to the same malicious site, but really, there isn't anything out there yet (notice the yet).

I ask him did he surf some porn sites or something and he said no, but I really think he just wanted out of the contract. He might have even done something to make them quit working. I am sure Verizon tech department give them a good look at. My guess is they will be in the refurb shop before long and resold.

You can get a virus if you're root user. You can also install malware (trojan horse).

I don't know of either in the wild, though. Even if there were, Linux kernal viruses don't propagate well because few users are root. I'm not saying your friend is a liar - just that I don't believe him.

Not to be snarky (too late), but if there was an Android virus it would be front page news of Gizmodo and Engadget for weeks (along with commentary on how iPhones are better because they don't multitask or use Flash or allow you to install unapproved applications).

A security flaw is not a Virus....
