I'm sure there was an extensive design team that had a reason for it, something like creating a conical shape for ergonomics or something.

i think it has to do with the hardware inside the phone maybe. it raises where the power button and headphone jack are. sorry, not saying this as a complaint at all.. just fascinated with the engineering that goes into small tech devices. the led placement by the power cord plug is also very cool. always notced it lighting up when plugging it in. but never noticed the actual led light until a few days ago.
