There are great step-by-steps here in the forum how to do a factory reset. It's very simple.

How-To: Hard Reset your Motorola Droid

    Manual Reset Instructions

There are apps to back up your data/applications/settings (ie MyBackupPro)
... as a factory reset will 'wipe' your phone clean (like it came out of the box) and a back up app can save you the hassle of having to download all your apps again manually.

I am high voltage come to think of it. Can't even enjoy the one armed bandits in Reno unless I wear rubber boots and gloves lol.

Another one of the symtoms was selecting an icon such as messaging (green spongebob) and getting maps instead.

I put them in the post above your last two for you!

Just remember, factory reset/hard reset will wipe all your data, settings, etc to the condition your phone was when you took it out of the box.

If you want to back up your applications you might want to get a backup application. If you don't mind setting your Droid back up from scratch then don't worry about it! Good luck!

:::: You sure did! I don't know why I didn't notice them the first time. Reading too fast in hyper scared/worried mode I guess. My apologies!

We did the Backup Assistant thing. Will that work again?

You can use any Backup method you like. I was just suggesting one in case you had no idea.

IT'S HEALED!! I went through the steps and now she's working beautifully. This time even a little green robot appeared with a big white hand, and I was led through the entire setup procedure!

Thank you thank you thank you!!!

now on to problem 5... how to get it away from my daughter.

    Not yet.
Get familiar with the Droid, get comfortable with it. Enjoy it for a while.

Then, if you read up on what it means to 'root' and "how to", maybe think about it. But for now, just enjoy a fully functional device!
