text notifications

Is there any way or any app that will allow you to assign a paticular tone or alert to a contact when they text message you? I know you can do it for phone calls but I don't see anything for text. I use to do it on the Blackberry storm. I recieive alot of alerts,news,sports scores,etc. and don't like to check my phone every time unless I know who it is.

Handcent text messaging app may have this option but not entirely sure...

I think handsent allows you to do it for all text messages but not just for individual contacts. I might be wrong.

no when you have a contact open in handsent you can click on the corner to bring up the settings for that individual contact and change what you want

although it doesnt look like handset will allow you to add custom sounds/ringtones, can i make a ringtone in ringdroid and apply it to certain contacts in handcent?

Handsent or SMS Popup will do that.
