    Canceled my Google account. Uh-oh.

A couple of months ago my wonderful Droid decided to spam a thousand people in my company from my Gmail account.

I didn't want it to happen again so I did a factor reset on my phone and canceled my Google account and created a new one with a different Gmail address.

Last night I realized I hadn't seen a Market update in a long time. I tried to go to the Market and realized it was married to the Gmail account that no longer exists.

How screwed am I? When I get a new phone will there be no way to get my paid apps back with my new account?

Burns me up that so much Google dependency is built in with (what seems like) no recourse for a situation like this.

Did you try calling Verizon. I had a very similar issue when I created a new google account. I called verizon and they walked me through it.

Apps are tied to the account they were purchased on. You could email the developers and see if they can help.

That's what I was afraid of. Bad design. Email accounts change.

I'll wait until I get my new phone then talk to Verizon and see if they can swing everything over to my new Gmail address. Arg.

Verizon really has nothing to do with it. Apps are purchased from Google Checkout. It is set up that way for portability when you get a new device.

I understand your frustration. To me, the bigger concern, what caused the account to generate all of those emails. It may have been simpilar to rectify that problem.

Yes, email addresses do change. Many of us have multiple email addresses. Google or any other vendor can not be held responsible for the content or the performance of the users account. If one gets "botted" that responsibility lies with the user.

For what is it worth, Apple does the same with their apps. When you register in the app store you create an account. One does have the ability to create multiple accounts and add to your device.

I had about $40 worth of apps. I guess those are gone when I get a new phone.

As far as what happened: I had to do a factory reset. I backed up first, did the reset, and when I did the restore, it went back in time and sent every calendar event I ever had to every member of the distribution list for each event. People were really pissed because some of them got a hundred emails all at once.

It was a really bad day. I deleted the entire account to ensure that there was no chance anything could ever come from that address again.
