Thread: Canceled my Google account. Uh-oh.

    Does anyone know if there's any way I can get Google to migrate my account from the old Gmail address to the new one? I can't find any sort of customer support contact links.

    Right now I have no access to the Market at all. The Droid won't let me remove the dead account from the phone without doing a factory reset, which I'm not going to do. It won't sync my new Gmail account even though it's set to sync. It's pretty hosed up.

    Even if you can reactivate the deleted account, to set a new account for the phone I believe you'd still have to do a factory reset.

    Yes.
    I'm too nervous about resurrecting the account because I'd be afraid it would spew those emails again and I'd get fired. I just want to migrate the settings to my new account. But not holding out much hope that it's possible.

    Did you ever determine what caused the emails to be distributed?

    If you are able to resurrect the account just do not sign in on your phone until you remediate the email issue.

    On your phone, go into settings -> accounts and uncheck the sync settings on that account and never use it again. Also, stop using "local backup" products on "cloud-stored" data. Stuff like this happens - it's a VERY bad idea.

    I bet it's just a conflict between the data restore (done outside of officially-supported mechanisms) and the cloud-sync mechanisms. As far as GCalendar was concerned, mitch just created ~1000 meeting requests while offline when the restore happened. So what should it do? Well, if I tried to send an email/meeting invite while offline, shouldn't it send an email once it gets back online?

    There are officially-supported mechanisms for working with GCal and I bet this backup app didn't work within those rules. In fact, it clearly didn't because, if it did, then it shouldn't have backed up that data to begin with. It should have allowed GCal to keep the data backed up online. What it probably did was do an export and then an import. As far as GCal is concerned, the import was intentionally done to create new meeting invites. To top this off, if another backup/sync tool was used (such as Google Calendar Outlook Sync), this would greatly increase the likelihood of something like this happening.

    I'll say this again. ANY time you're working with backup up and restoring data that is backed up and restored via another means, you MUST be careful what you're doing or the two will conflict and you'll either end up with duplicates (as is the case here) or you may actually end up deleting them all.

    You may be correct, Jax. I'm not a big fan of the "cloud' environment. I have my own external drive.
