Agreed. I have been at my local verizon company store and there answer for people having a smart phone problem is to call the 800 number. I have actually helped the people while at the store by showing them how to do things. Meanwhile the verizon techs had no clue. One of the counter jockies asked me if I wanted a job working for them. Told them no thanks, at one time I did apply for a job working for verizon doing tech support in thier stores, they did not hire me. Oh well their loss.
Perhaps hiring knowledgeable consultants is a way to go though. I have felt since the launch of the Droid that Verizon should take a page out of Apples book and conduct classes for this phone or the Android OS as whole. Apple does this for the iPhone and other products they offer. I obviously realize that Apple has the brick & mortar in which to conduct this but I'm sure Verizon could find some in-store solution or cheap venue to do it.

Scheduling consultants at VZW stores to show off the power of the phone could raise awareness. I'm sure there are a few people on this site that would take them up on the offer. Who wouldn't mind making a few extra bucks in this economy.

    Droid training

The Verizon store in Fairview Hts. IL is having Droid training the first Tuesday of the month, open to all.

When I was pre-shopping the week before the release, the manager gave me a quick 5 minute tour, even though the store was packed with shoppers.

During my activation, it appeared all of the employees were very well trained on the Eris.

I've learned a few of the basics, but I'm not use to PDA's in general. One of my problems is that I've got a bit of hand movement and when scrolling, I open a contact or dial a number I don't want. I'm hoping to decrease the sensitivity somehow.

Yeah, that is one thing I am surprised about, no way to adjust sensitivity. Maybe they will add that to furture OS releases.

When I first got my Droid I had a similar problem. What I learned to do is, whenever possible, I try to find a black space on the screen and it seems to be working.
