First off, you're taking a rumor from Engadget as truth about 2.1? Really?
Second, while the N1 might be Google's prize phone, you're missing a big chunk on how this Android thing works.
Google updates/changes the OS, adds features, fixes bugs. Then they release it to the public, for free. At that point it is up to the MANUFACTURERS of Android smart phones to port this to their hardware. Google is the first step, it is up to MOTO to keep giving us updates. If Google stopped updating the SDK and OS, then it would screw over EVERY manuf. that uses the Android OS, not just Droid users.

The 2.1 gallery is amazing and i want that. The news/weather widget i thought was cheap looking, beautifulwidgets wins that race by a mile. 5 home screens, for me is overkill, i use 1 home screen currently. The new update will hopefully prevent my phone from making random calls and maybe a little battery and system tweaks. Thank you Moto/Google/Verizon, I love you.
Same here! Thank you Moto/Google/Verizon in advance!

Oh God, stop with all the doom and gloom already. Some of you will just never be satisfied.

I guess I'm a virgin to smartphones being that this is my 1st one but I've never gotten ANY updates on ANY other phone. Now I'm about to receive my 2nd update on the Droid. Life's back to normal for me, I mean after it was flipped upside down in an alternate universe yesterday when the Colts lost...
But I'm happy again

There was no way the colts would win. I knew it. And this is my first too, and I just wqnna get flash.

Since I'm not rooted, have never been rooted, and have no intention of rooting.... I'm psyched about this. Whatever is or isn't included, great. It's all still an upgrade. For those of you planning on not getting the update because you have your phones the way you like them, I'll be sure to post with the results it gives me (and you can choose to be interested or dismiss them as you please).
P.S. I'm breaking the vow I made to myself by posting here. I swore I would not post in any 2.1 thread until someone had actually received the update.... but dang it all, I got sucked up in the commotion...

I would strongly suggest you find out what features there are before an angry mob of Droid users destroys either Motorola or Google.

I think if you know so much about 2.1, i think you should tell us if were getting the version engadget talked about or the full 2.1 experience. =) No disrespect, it just seems by what you say in your posts, that you know more than most. Are you a beta tester or something? lol =)
hahahaha....
Well now that the cat is out of the bag I can tell you.
The deadline for the final build to be in was this Friday. So it was up in the air after Friday what would happen.
They could have released it on Monday or held it a couple more weeks if there was a problem which would have spilled into March.
My sources did not know how that would shake out only that it could be within a week or 3 depending on how solid the build was.
I don't know what features will be included right now. If I find out I'll post them.

Rumors tend to have a great deal of fact behind them when reliable sources. Go take a trip over to MacRumors.com they predict half of the stuff apple is gonna put out and that stuff is top secret.
You honestly believe Moto is gonna update the Droid till the end of time, even when they have 2 new Android phones coming out in the near future? I don't know man. I give it one year of little updates/bug fixes and that's it. But hell I could be wrong, you could be wrong. We are just guessing right now.

You could have both of those now through APK's that don't require rooting.

Even if there is live wallpapers...who cares? I can imagine that those will lag the phone and take up more memory. I don't unlock my phone to stare at moving wallpapers, but maybe that's just me. Besides...all of my icons and widgets are going to cover them up anyhow.
Yeah this is what i think about "awesome home screens". I don't see the point, the total amount of time, per week, i stare at my home screen could be measured in seconds. The picture gallery is what i want and an updated music player, other than that i am happy.
