Rooting

Can anyone post some links or explain to me what this is. I only use my Droid 1 for general stuff but would like to learn what other things rooting can do

Rooting gives one the ability to have super user access to the phones software. I had a rooted D1 and the things I found were most useful were the ability to overclock (speed up) the processor, clean out unwanted apps that were unable to just be simply deleted (ie. Browser, twitter, some live wallpapers) to free up space, using custom roms which have been designed to optimize the software of the phone and just do general theme changes that my my phone more unique and more personal. It also helped my D1 to feel less left behind as newer os systems were released but not actually relesed for the D1 (ie. Gingerbread). Also had better control over the battery and how it was used. Hope this helps.
