if you're looking for a 'file explorer' app then yes....
I'd recommend EStrongs File Explorer or Astro File Manager... both have been pretty solid for everyone. You can move files around on your SD card (cut/copy/paste/rename/etc/etc/etc)

With ASTRO you can even long press on any file and set it as a gmail attachement, I don't know if EStrongs has the same function as I have never used it. It's a useful feature so that you can email things other than pictures.

yeah you can create folders on desktop by holding on screen and then choosing and option there. Astro is very cool, easy to navigate and lets you ad a shortcut for files or folders right on screen, has a great built in viewer and cool thumbnail view
I use it alot and keep finding new features with it

Does it only see the shared network drives/folders? Or are you able to enter a username and pass to get to the root drives?

When I was browsing the lan and choose the 'C' root drive of a networked computer, it prompted me for a username/password, which I entered and it worked for me. =)
