    Phone Locator App...?

I have no idea if this is possible or if it already exists but is there an app that allows you to locate your phone using another Droid via GPS? In my vision, my sister would be able to download the app to her droid, and then if I lose my phone, I'd be able to enter a pin number or something in the app on her phone which would then show where my phone is on her GPS.

I think it should be possible since if I wanted to I think I could set it up like that anyway (what is that called again, where your friends can GPS you all the time?) but it's not something I want active on a regular basis, which is why there would be a PIN number involved or something along those lines.

I realize the phone would have to be on (I think?) and GPS would have to be enabled, but I think something like this would be extremely handy, especially considering how much the phone cost and how much information is on it. It could really save your ass if you catch the loss quick enough (before the battery dies).

Does any of this make sense?

    Just read this awhile ago.

    Droid X App #3: WaveSecure

While you're loading up your new Droid X with apps, music, and data, why not take a moment to protect yourself in case the phone's ever lost or stolen?
WaveSecure may be one of the most important Android apps you'll ever install. If your Droid X is missing, WaveSecure's Web site lets you remotely activate the phone's GPS system and pinpoint its exact location. If it turns out the phone's fallen into the wrong hands, one more click will remotely wipe all of your personal data from the device. And if the thief tries to swap out the SIM card, WaveSecure will automatically lock the phone down.
The WaveSecure app itself is free, but in order to use the service beyond its seven-day trial period, you'll need to pay an annual subscription fee of about $20 a year.
(Note: I've previously recommended another security-oriented Android app called Mobile Defense. It has similar functionality, but unfortunately, its developers have temporarily returned to a closed beta model and suspended all new registrations while they prepare for their next release.)

Thanks for that link! I'm gonna try this app--this is perfect. I misplace my phone often and this is a great way to track it down.

One of the simplest location trackers for Android is called Where's My Droid. This simple GPS-driven app lets you create a secret "attention word" or passphrase that you can use to trigger a find-me mode on your phone via text message. When your phone goes missing, you'll have two options: Either text your standard attention word to trigger a loud ring that will let you find the phone when you're sure you're within earshot, or text your GPS attention word, and the phone will reply with its exact latitude and longitude so you can drive to its location and pick it up. While this app won't do anything to protect your data from theft, it does make it easy to recover a phone that's simply vanished from sight.

The two major competitors in this area are Wave Secure, noted above, and Mobile Defense.

They provide largely comparable functionality, though I believe Wave Secure enables wiping data on a lost phone and, at least several months ago, Mobile Defense did not.
