    Is Handcent really free?

    I am truly sorry if this has been covered, but I can't seem to find the answer.

    I know that the Handcent app is free to download.

    My question is: are messages sent through handcent charged against your text message plan on verizon? I have the required data(web) and email plan but don't have unlimited text. Oh, by the way my new droid was shipped yesterday.

    I only text back and forth with my granddaughter on my current dumb phone. I can call her unlimited, but she would rather text than talk on the phone. true of lots of teens nowadays i think.

    Yes, handcent will count against your text plan. If you used Google Voice for texting then no, it would not count against your text plan.

    handcent uses the same messages that the regular messaging app that came with the phone would use

    Handcent is literally a different physical app to text people with, the app itself is free its the service that still costs you. Google Voice, however, makes the SMS service free

    Oh and to the OP, I'm not sure if I've seen it in the market yet (might've been late) but textplus lets you text for free

    From what I can tell it depends on your plan. VZW offers a couple different texting options the cheapest being 250 text messages for $5 and then 500 messages for $10 with free mobile to mobile.
