Proper way to exit an Android app?

The right way to end an Android app is?

    A. Android Back button.
    B. An Exit/Quit button in the app.
    C. Kill the task/app.

Even the Android Market doesn't use (A) if a download has started.
    Not every app has (B).
Many apps restsart themselves, so sometimes (C) does not work.

I thought the Android Home button throws the app in the background, not exit it.
Are there apps that terminate using the Home button?
And the Android Back button is used by some apps to navigate to the previous screen, not exit the app.
Can be confusing to an Android newbie...

Some apps shut down after being idle for certain time

Another option would be to set all apps you don't want running all the time to auto-end, which is what I did.

Usually you just keep pressing your "back/ previous" button til it exits the application.

Applications/task manager and then just tap the check boxes of apps you want to auto-end and then tap "add to auto-end" at the bottom.

I'd love to know how to auto end apps also. I'm getting a SGSII on Tuesday switching over from an iPhone. I'm used to an app like backgrounder which let's you set those kind of options to which apps background and which don't. To have this on my GSII would be epic.
