Remote Desktop Apps?

Are there any apps that actually use VNC?

I've got VNC servers on several of my machines. I have no interest in adding another remote server app, particularly since they probably won't work on my machines anyway. Very few of my machines have Windows on them -- VNC has the virtue of being cross platform.

androidvnc and remote vnc. Of the two, I think remote vnc is a little better ( enough that I paid for the paid version over the lite version) but it is a little twitchy.
When you pan, you also move the mouse, but doesn't seem really consistent. Works better if your screen resolution is similar to the resolution of the Droid so you don't need to pan too much.

www.xtralogic.com/rdpclient.shtml - gets great reviews but the app costs $18. Not bad if you really need it for emergency back-office IT work and monitoring, etc.

On the Android us the Market app and browse for "communications / Top Paid". There doesn't appear to be a "try before you buy" version that I can find...

I purchased this app. Works great so far. Has the ability to fit your desktop to your phones screen which is nice.

I use it with connectbot to tunnel RDP over SSH.

And Im not certain if RDP is end-to-end encrypted. This may be important depending on your situation. I'm not sure if the capability to tunnel VNC over SSH is possible as it is with basic computer networking. I have no idea about tunneling RDP over SSH or even if this is necessary or if this actually requires the device to be rooted. Perhaps someone could clarify some of these questions.

Yes, RDP is an encrypted protocol that runs over port 3389 and can be tunneled over SSH if desired. A good tutorial on how to set up an SSH server on Windows is available here. Haven't tried any of this on the Droid, but would like to find a decent and free RDP client (might just be a matter of time.)

Or you can install DD-WRT on your home router (if you have a compatible router). It has a built in SSH server, and much more.

This is what I do, and I love not having to rely on a PC being on, ect. You can also wake up computers on your lan via it's webUI, if you have them sleeping and want to connect to them

Newer vresions of the Windows OS's have built-in SSL encryption support so that clients can connect directly to the RDP host securely (SSL) without the SSH tunnelling step.

The "pro" versions Droid RDP and VNC apps from toremote.com support SSL encrypted communications and ssh tunneling, respectively. Only the highest RDP app has the SSL encryption support ($15). There is another version ($8 or so) that has everything except the extra encryption features and there is a free version which leaves out some conveniences included in the paid versions. The App's author is very responsive and can/will provide you with links to SSL information and step-by-step instructins on how to set up the RDP host and the Droid app.

Note: (All of this is based on the RDP host, not the client) RDP itself only supports SSL for Vista, 7 and Windows Server versions. The Windows XP RDP host does not support the advanced encrypted communications. Yet more of Microsoft's way of forcing users to up-version...

At least that is how I understood his question. If that's NOT what he was after, well then, it IS what I am looking for. Or a bluetooth keyboard that will pair with the Droid.

I hate the physical keyboard on the Droid (I'm always hitting two keys or the wrong key). I can do better with the virtual keyboard but then I always have to open up the slider and switch to the physical if I need to cursor back to change something or to do cut and paste etc.

That would be awesome, but it won't happen until someone roots the Droid. Any type of remote access would be welcomed. I guess I was hoping that Google would have allowed this out of the box.

I setup a VPN connection to my office, and then setup a VMware machine running a very light OS with a few tools I need for the more common night and weekend support things (bounce service, reset password, etc.) Set the resolution to 800x600 and installed a VNC server on it. Then it's just a matter of connecting the VPN and using androidVNC to connect in. It works really well, and is secure since it's behind VPN.

There is also a Citrix client that is supposed to be out (soon?) so you can use your company Citrix server if you have that - That I can't wait for.
