I didn't like juice defender because it kept disconnecting my 3g and then my phone would have to look for 3g again and again. I just put a monster battery on my droid x so that I could surf the web for a long time.

There is not really a battery saving app that's going to go as far or be as efficient as a rom like rubix. Roms employ a lot of task governors from the base system so you're really not going to get much better than that. I've found I've always sacrificed functionality for battery life, especially with those apps.
As far as generalities go, the primary drains are going to always be the screen and network, so just get a brightness widget! Haha
