I am thinking about getting it, but I am unsure about the plastic cover that goes over the slide-out keyboard. Does it make typing on it harder/less responsive? Also, is the clip magnetic, and if it is, does it cause the Droid to go into docking mode?

For the price I would go with the Sena Elegea which is made for the iphone but fits the droid perfectly. I have one and it is the best I have looked at and I have seen a dozen or so in person and more online. The sena belt clip is low profile so it does not stick out on your hip like the one above looks like it could.

I have two pouches and two holsters and I like the Sena best if you want to version that is a holster and the waterfield is a great protector if you carry in your pocket.

(also comes in black, which might be more in keeping with the Droid original color scheme)

and they have a video demo up:

Looks like they handle the sliding keyboard by just opening the case up, right side hinged. As near as I can figure, it has holes in all the right places, although I'm not too sure about the speaker, as that's covered up a bit (some other cases have a smaller opening, maybe that would have been better), but probably still works.

Being Al, I would guess that the protection is going to be pretty good, excepting of course the screen, which given the mounting on the back for the clip, would be pretty exposed if you wore this on a belt. Still, in a pocket, screen inward, probably about as protective as you're going to get.

This is the first metal case I've seen for the Droid, so progress is being made.
Oh geez. Totally OT, but that person in the video does not know how to use a Droid. Watching it gave me secondhand embarrassment for them. :/

To be more on topic - I'm not a fan of having to open the case to get to the physical keyboard... Even if I don't use it that often.

if the aluminum case is anything like the one I had for the Storm, the hinge opens too easily. The phone easily falls out, and forget about even a minor fall.

it looks nicer than the sena case to me (and not on backorder). will return for a review in the week.
I like the idea of a vertical pouch belt clip with naked Droid and will be interested to see how this works out. I wonder if the lack of a flap to secure it is going to be a problem or not, or whether it is tight enough to hold it securely. I am worried about the thing falling out when I bend over and smashing on the ground. Right now I am using am elcheapo neoprene case from Fry's made by Cellet for a blackberry which does not fit right but does the job.

Also considering the Seido case/holster but I really like the car mount which would be incompatible.

I purchased the PDair Vertical Pouch without the clip and was slightly disappointed. It added much more bulk than I anticipated. I intended to just slip it in my pants pocket, and while it is possible, it is highly uncomfortable. If you are to purchase this, I would recommend one with the belt clip. Its not really intended to be placed in your jeans pockets (however you can put it in your jacket pockets). The case overall is made of very soft leather. You don't have to worry about it falling out of the pouch. The two straps gives it a tight hold; often too tight a hold. To be honest, I can't imagine not pulling the whole case from your belt while trying to remove your phone from it (it is THAT snug). Anyway, I'm going to return it and order the SENA case. I would give it a 3.5/5.

Has anyone tried out this one? I'm looking for a slim sleeve that holds the phone snug and won't slide out on its own.

Hard to know for sure if the Google Nexus One cases will fit, needs a formal announce/ship first, but seems somewhat unlikely given the leaked dimensions:

    Dimensions: 119 x 59.8 x 11.5 mm

    Droid: 116.8 x 61 x 13.7 mm

So on length you'd be fine, but on width and depth, maybe a bit on the tight side. Maybe if it was a soft slip case, and loose enough.

No, haven't seen/tried the Verizon case:

Kind of looks like the Droid hangs out the top, but you can never tell.

The Sena slip case I had on order finally showed up yesterday, it's a slim sleeve, seems very nicely made, and is certainly snug, so that might be something for you to have a look at. I'll post some more details when I get the time and experience with the case, but there are ample references here already.

    Here's a link:

Sena Cases - Designer Leather Cases : BlackBerry case, iPhone case, Treo case, iPod touch case, and other PDA cases

    and picture:

The Droid fits fully into the sleeve, only the top is exposed. It's not very thick, not much in the way of extra padding or protection, but the leather is nice and gives you scratch and at least a little protection. It's snug enough that it was pulling the back door of the Droid out of place a bit, but I worked on it to loosen the leather up, and that's not a problem now. You push on the bottom of the Sena case to get the Droid out. It seems like a number of cases have the top of the phone exposed, ala the Verizon, just cannot figure out why that is being done that way, but the Sena pretty much fully covers everything but the top (5 out of 6 surfaces).

I think many of the sleeve type cases leave the top exposed in one way or another to improve grip when removing the phone from the sleeve when snug.
You of course mention the alternative of squeezing it out like tooth-paste, but I believe the Sena, with the cutouts on the top sides and the Verizon imaged a post or two before do this for easier removal.
Personally I am just using your described method with the Waterfield because it does extend a little past the top.

    Cheers,

Still haven't settled on a case that totally works for me. Been looking for a horizontal pouch case with a secure clip. I initially used a cheapo case I had as a backup for my Voyager, then last week I got a Moto horizontal pouch case. The Moto case is larger than it needs to be and the clip is not really secure, it can easily be pushed up off my belt.

The side pouch that was recommended to me earlier seems to have the same plastic (not too secure) Moto belt clip, so that may not work.

So far, the cheapo Voyager case seems to be the winner for secure attachment to a belt and for being conservative in size. But my old one is worn, so frankly I've been considering just buying another el cheapo Voyager case.

    Still on the hunt...
