EDIT: I used root explorer and went to /system / apps and removed the maps.apk... removing google maps from my phone, and attemtped to instal the update, did not work.
Reinstalling the ROM replaced maps, but the update still will not work.

EDIT2: Another thing i noticed is that i no longer get notifications when apps are updated in the market... I used to on other ROMS ive used.
when i try deleting the maps file it says error deleting... this is with astro. Any ideas?
I have a lot of good how to articles about music managing and battery life etc. PM me if interested.

    6) menukey > Settings/Applications/Managed Applications/ menukey > filter > all
    7) located com.android.google.apps.maps which has a size of 0.00b

This worked for me, went the cheap route and mounted the volume through the terminal emulator, THANKS!!

Just a couple of things was different for me:

*steps 1-4: If you are going the cheap route and mounting the volume through the terminal be aware that you are using a linux based system and everything is case sensitive. Spent a few minutes trying to figure out why Maps.apk wouldn't delete until I realized I wasn't capitalizing the M

*step 2 - Instead of the folder /system/apps my folder was named /system/app So if your phone has app instead of apps don't be scared just navigate to the folder via terminal or root explorer and confirm the file is there.

*step7 - When you're looking for the correct file to delete my maps file didn't say 0.0mb on the side, said something like 2.0mb. It wasn't until I looked at the details of the file that I saw the data size was 2.0mb but the program itself was 0.0mb

These are very minute details but for users that follow guides to the letter these details can help when they feel they are stuck.

    in terminal type
    su
    mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
    rm /system/app/Maps.apk
    mount -o remount,ro -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system
    reboot

go to settings manage applications menu filter all look for .com.google.application.maps or something like that. its like0.0KB... uninstall.

go to market install maps. done.

sign in problem is this, open maps, menu, more, sign in, "!" show up in notification bar, allow google to sign you in to maps. wait 2 seconds. close maps use task manager to kill all applications. re-enter maps and your now signed in. done.
