I know top-posting sucks so I'll make it brief:
    0. uncheck settings->keyboard->enable swype
    1. adb shell rwsystem
    2. astro search from / all files with 'wype' in them
    3. adb shell delete all those files
    4. astro search from / all files with 'wype' ... NO FILES FOUND
    5. reboot
    6. astro search -- still no files found
    7. go to the https://beta.swype.com/android/get/ from droid
    8. re-download installer
    9. run installer
    10. log in
    11. download swype
    12. install
    13. accept license
    14. enable swype
    15. test it (works fine)
    16. reboot
    "Swype
The Swype package you installed is configured for another device and will operate with limited functionality.

Please contact Swype about this issue."

I've tried to be thorough in documenting the steps.
So YES you have helped me to uninstall the old Swype and for that I thank you. However, even the "new beta" does not want to start enabled on the Droid.

    Suggestions?

    *NOW* can't remove swype.
Disabled swype as keyboard of choice. Rebooted.
Used Astro and removed all files/directories with "swype" in the name.
    Clicked on swype installer
Says it's installed already and needs to be uninstalled.
    Let it uninstall.

Did you use astro to search / or /sdcard? There are two files in /system. The apk install file and the .so file in /system/lib and you need both of those to be deleted too. Those areas are read only so you need to change them to read/write, delete the files, then make it read/only again. Root Explorer is one method, the other is to type the commands into terminal emulator. You also need to delete or rename your leaked copy of the file on your SD card too. You also can try and go to settings/apps/app mgr/ locate swype and uninstall from there. Then go back to your email and grab the beta installer again because it is supposed to be new. I'm on version 5652 that is installed now.

Updated to ultimate droid 6.5 and adamz kernel. Swype works without any errors or warnings. FYI

I get to your step #3 and try to delete 2 files:'/system/app/Swype.apk' and '/system/lib/libSypeCore.so'. When I try do delete them is says 'Error deleting files'. Pretty sure this is because 'Read-Only' but root explorer won't allow me permission to change to read/write.

Swype and Swype Installer are uninstalled through 'applications' 'filter' 'all'

    Any ideas?

See step 1.. "rwsystem". On UltimateDroid it's "sysrw".

If you don't have either you can mount -o remount,rw the /system partition.

i saw a nice tutorial written by Bastosero (kudos to him/her) and copied and pasted for you. if this doesn't help you then you're going to just have to read thru the whole post. there are lots of ppl with your problem and quite a few different solutions.

Steps To Install Swype Beta For SmokedGlass ROM Users:

    1. You will need Root Explorer and Astro

    2. Go to the phone menu and go to Applications

    3. Next, go to Manage applications and click the menu button on the phone

    4. Choose Filter and then choose All

    5. Uninstall everything in there that has Swype (even the beta installer for those that installed it already and didn't work)

    6. After uninstalling Swype, open Astro

    7. Click on Search for Astro and type the word "Swype" (without the parenthesis) in the search box

    8. Next, click on the Show Advanced Options below the box

    9. Click on the drop-down arrow to change which directory in which it will search

    10. Choose "/" instead of the current "/sdcard/"

    11. Put a check mark on the boxes "Include directory names" and "Search sub directories"

    12. Now click on the magnifying glass icon to search

    13. After a couple of seconds it will list all the directories where it has Swype files (remember all of those since you would want to delete all of those files)

    14. Now, open Root Explorer (I suggest Root Explorer because you can mount and unmount from there) and go to each directory that lists all the Swype files that you need to delete (the ones you found from Astro)

    15. After you have deleted everything, reboot your Droid

    16. Once rebooted, open your browser and go to your e-mail that you used to sign up for the beta (I just used the stock browser)

    17. Click on the link to download the Swype-Installer.apk and install it

    18. After it says it's done installing, on the bottom choose Open

    19. After opening it, it will prompt you to enter the e-mail and password you chose when you signed up for the beta, so sign in

    20. After signing in, it should automatically download the Swype.apk file and install it also

    21. After installing that, Enable it so you can use Swype, but reboot first just to make sure no other problems occur after it's done installing
This method worked for me perfectly.
    Had to buy Root Explorer...
    Thanks a lot!
